Before we get into this topic today, I want to call out a short love note at the bottom, giving you a heads up on an exclusive opportunity to work with me 1:1 through a VIP Strategy/Coaching Session. So check that out, before you move on to your next email or task or fun activity for the day. And mark your calendar!

Let’s talk about friendship, how it begins, and how it evolves over time. I shared this post recently on Instagram, but I know some of you may not be on there or may have missed this one.

  • 6.5.21 – Nature Walk from Robert Moses Beach (field 5) to Kismet, Fire Island. One of my favorites. (And a few other photos from other times.)

Today it’s the story of how Laurel and I met nearly ten years ago, back in 2012. We’re both runners. In fact, we met at a 10K race at the LI Marathon weekend. Manda and I ran that race together, as a tune-up for the Chicago Half, a month later.

I remember meeting Laurel at the finish line recovery area. I might have been waiting for Manda to come through or searching for her. I noticed Laurel by herself. And felt compelled to speak to her, to get to know her. Something about her sweet, approachable energy made it possible. Turns out she ran the race by herself. We chatted for a while, about the race, our results, and I complimented her impressive time, on her shorts and headband. What can I say? I was impressed by it all and I liked her. We became Facebook friends at first. Maybe even exchanged cell numbers that day to run together. Because I wanted more running friends and I wanted to learn from her. How did she train? How did she run so fast?

Needless to say, we remained friends throughout the years and have run quite a few races together (NY State Summer Series, Cow Harbor 10K), hiked together, celebrated birthdays, and even Laurel’s wedding last Sept 2020. (See photos on Instagram)

Friendships happen because people are intentional and open to meeting others. Friendships grow and evolve because people are genuinely and positively supporting and showing up for each other. It all begins with that first chat, smile, or compliment.

Have you made any new friends or connections lately? How are you nurturing your friendships? How well do you stay in touch and continue to be there for your friends?

May this inspire you to show up in your life today, tomorrow, and always.
