Ever had one of those days where it just didn’t work out the way you’d planned? You were anticipating one outcome and may have felt blind-sided, disappointed, or frustrated. It felt like you were at your limit and losing your patience. Maybe you were ready to walk out. Enough is enough, right?!

Let me share one of my moments and my brave reaction to speaking up for myself. Maybe you can relate somehow.

“So what you’re telling me is that I’m performing at the HR Generalist level and I continue to be an exceeds expectations employee, but you can’t promote me now. And I need to wait around for maybe, if possibly, for this next promotion until July. I see.”

My boss nodded in agreement, and I stood up and stormed out of his office. Then another thought hit me, so I walked back to his office across the hallway.  “And you know what, I don’t think my Management fought hard enough for my promotion.” I managed to keep my calm composure while stating my perception, even while I was triggered.

Nonetheless, that was still bold and presumptuous of me! I felt I had been patient enough and was annoyed for not being recognized.

Here I was at my performance review meeting in December 2007, when I was up for my second promotion at that company. My boss presented me with the envelope with my merit increase. And I was in disbelief that he wasn’t communicating my anticipated promotion that we had previously spoken about. I had proven I was ready by successfully taking on additional responsibilities and projects.

And after a looong three years of graduate school part-time and working full-time, I finally received my Master’s Degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology that same year. Making me the perfect candidate to promote.

Performance, check. Master’s Degree, check. Demonstrated I was ready, check. I had checked off all the boxes. So what happened? Why the delay in the promotion?

Well, there are other factors going on behind the scenes that we might not be privy to at that moment. “Budget reasons” and “there needing to be more of a business justification for the promotion and backfill” was what my boss told me. What do you mean?

Within a few weeks, my boss circled back to advise me that they would be able to promote me in March of that year after the close of an acquisition. Turns out, the “business justification needed” was also linked to timing besides the acquisition.

One thing I need to add is to be careful of making bold statements, as I did above, as it might not be well-received and may backfire. I’m all about speaking your truth. There’s a way to communicate, stand up for yourself, be convincing maybe even challenging, though not be perceived as confrontational. I teach and coach my clients on how to Step up, Speak up, and Stand up for themselves in the right way.
