I am a humble badass warrior. I am like the Buffalo who goes Charging into the Storm. I face my doubts. I face my fears. I run through the resistance. I get comfortable with the uncomfortable. And I let others show up and support me.

Even when want to talk myself out of it.
Even when I want to lower the stakes.
Even when I want to quit the day before and in the middle of the race. (For real!)

I feel the feelings of nervousness and anxiety and fear. I begin to worry if I’m prepared enough. I begin to have terrible visions of pushing myself beyond my edge that I’m collapsing and throwing up at the end of the race.

Then I remember the way through.
I channel all of that energy into power.
I recognize this feeling. I’ve been here before.
Adrenaline. Anticipation. Feeling Alive.
I ride the wave of adrenaline pumping through my veins.
I find the momentum. I reconnect with my runner’s mindset.

I switch the vision to seeing myself make it through each mile, strong and grateful. I see myself having fun, high-five-ing kids’ hands (future runners of this race!), and welcoming the cheers. I remind myself who is waiting for me at the finish line.

I tell myself, “I have the courage, strength, and determination to make it. Remember that today and always.”

As I raced to the finish line, I remind myself, “Don’t quit two minutes before the miracle.“ Before the breakthrough. Before crossing over to the other side of the resistance. Finish strong.

And just like that, for the tenth time yesterday, I crossed the finish line (57:14 min, 9:13 mile pace) of The Great Cow Harbor 10K race, slightly faster than my predicted time (57:44min). And I wasn’t one hundred percent sure it would be possible this time. But I did it.

Every time, through every training run of this challenging hilly course and the actual race, I’m humbled by it, never overconfident. That’s part of the secret. That’s part of the strategy for this race and life.
