Past is Your Teacher KD Mantra

Past is your teacher, Present is your creation, Future is your inspiration,” Kacy Duke on Inventing Anna, Netflix limited Series, said to her training/coaching clients as a motivational mantra. If you’re not familiar, Kacy Duke is a real Celebrity Fitness Expert/Life Coach (portrayed by the actress, Laverne Cox), and she’s also an author and the founding Group Fitness Director of Equinox Fitness Clubs.

I virtually watched this series twice as my sister, Manda, saw it for the first time. And let me tell you, the second time is just as brilliant and fascinating. There’s a reason why it stayed on the Netflix Top 10 for over two months. Nonetheless, I’m not here to give a review of this Shondaland series or speak of Anna.

What I want to focus on is the takeaway from one of Kacy Duke’s motivational mantras and insightful perspective, which I became obsessed with her character and approach to life. I’m all about the mantras, if you didn’t know already.

“Past is your teacher, Present is your creation, Future is your inspiration.” (Download my Instagram mantra photo to your phone, if you’d like.) And if you want to wear the mantra, you can go get yourself a nice tank or T-shirt in Kacy’s Shopify store.

It’s said at a pivotal moment during their sweaty workout session when her clients look like they’re about to give up.

This moment is when the breakthrough, the better outcome, is on the other side. It’s just past the resistance, self-doubt, limiting beliefs, the part of you begging to quit and quit on yourself. But don’t you ever dare stop believing in yourself. Modify, go slower, redirect, sure that’s all good and sometimes necessary, and self-honoring. Recover and make a comeback. There’s a difference.

On a day when you feel like quitting, and you know you have more to give than you’re giving right then, consider how do you choose to show up for yourself? For your dreams? For that future, you’re creating for yourself and maybe your family? Find your inner badass and show up fully.

Let this mantra guide you as you recite it as a reminder or chant it in your mind on a run or during your workout. Let it guide you above past mistakes, lost opportunities, or whatever you thought could’ve been different or where you think you should be by now. Because you’re already on your way! And remember, you can Begin Again today, forget about waiting for perfect conditions. Because you’ll be waiting forever.

May this inspire you to show up in your life today, tomorrow, and always.
