Recently I was in a session with a client, and Bam! One of my familiar run mantras intuitively hit me, and I had to share it with her.

I will get there. I’m on my way. It doesn’t matter how long it takes me. All that matters is how I feel.

Because she was talking about her desire to make some big changes (move to a different city, enroll in an MBA program, create new and stronger friendships).

She was feeling unsettled. Struggling with the next steps, how to move forward, all the uncertainty, and the pressure to have it all figured out. She was even questioning if she had the courage. Failure also came up as a concern. And that’s where I had to stop her and remind her, “Wait a minute, I disagree. You’re absolutely courageous. You’ve made big life changes before and didn’t know anyone where you were going last time.”

Here’s what else I shared with her, “Your focus can change, and it doesn’t mean you’re abandoning your dream or goal or desire. Trust yourself, trust the process.”

I disclosed to her that my memoir has been a work-in-progress for years. I still believe in the power of sharing my story. At the same time, over the last few years, my attention has shifted since leaving corporate to building my coaching and consulting practice. I’m still writing, connected to my writing communities, attending workshops and classes, and committed to my growth. I’m exploring other ways to get my story out there.

I haven’t given up or abandoned my dream. Far from it, I’m being strategic. I’m still a storyteller and super excited about a new project I’m starting soon!

All this to say, sometimes you have to focus on what’s the next best feel-good, joyful, or fun action you can take toward your goals. It may not even be linear or make sense initially. So what would that be for you? Maybe it feels like a detour from your original plan, but perhaps it’s exactly what will move you forward for what’s most aligned for you.

I will get there. I’m on my way. It doesn’t matter how long it takes me. All that matters is how I feel.
