A few weeks ago, I was a Guest Speaker at Half Hollow Hills High School West (3 classes back to back!) and I discussed with the students the topic, Learning to Embrace Change in Your Life and Career. Without a doubt, Embracing Change is so essential to master, especially if you want to achieve some big goals and conquer your self-limiting beliefs, fears and doubts!
It’s when I’ve stepped forward, believed in myself, stayed committed to the outcome and true to myself, that’s when some powerful moments happened in my life and career!
In this video clip from that day, I shared with the High School Students, How I became a Half Marathon Runner & then got featured in FITNESS Magazine for the July/August 2012 issue.

Key Strategies / Insights to Take Away
- Be Persistent and Determined, regardless of the challenges. Trust yourself and your intuition. Never let anyone or a situation get the best of you!
- Never underestimate your ability to overcome your fears, doubts and self-limiting beliefs. Give yourself permission to go after what you want out of life despite this, or what friends and/or family tell you.
- Get in the habit of embracing change and the unknown. Fears will diminish as you see results. It’s okay to make mistakes, and to have some failure. Even the most successful and accomplished people, have made mistakes many times over. It’s about the journey and learning from these experiences and approaching it differently next time. So instead decide to Become a Recovering Perfectionist Like Me and approach life this way!
- Truth be told, I still have to find the encouragement within myself when I’m looking to step more outside my comfort zone. I also have learned to reach out to my supportive team of friends and community of like-minded individuals. You never have to do it alone!
Facing my fears and committing to a goal I never thought I could accomplish, and actually crossing that finish line in the Hamptons Half Marathon in September 2011, has empowered me to keep facing my fears, taking more risks, and embracing the unknown in life!
So now, I would love to hear your thoughts, insights, and updates! Write a comment below on how you’ve tried something new or embraced change. Because when you embrace change or something new, then you’ve allowed yourself to conquer your self-limiting beliefs, fears, and/or doubts. So let’s recognize that and keep it up!
Otherwise, perhaps you’re considering trying something new and embracing a change, so then tell me about that and if there’s anything holding you back. Then think about the steps you can take to get you there and create a plan for achieving this goal/desire/dream. Here’s a Goal Setting Worksheet to help support you in creating this plan.

Great article and makes me think of the challenges of the diversity (in finance and accounting) of my new job and the doubts I sometimes have. Thanks for the motivation and reminder to believe in myself. It is true that the fear becomes less as you get further along. (Sorry cant post comment public bc too personal)

Thanks Robyn for reading and sharing your thoughts/reflection on how this relates to your life! We tend to be our own worst critics and sometimes set unrealistic expectations for ourselves (myself included!) of when something should be accomplished. Recognize what you have accomplished so far, how successfully you have transitioned into your new job already, and remember to not take on everything all yourself. Ask for help/guidance and delegate where you can. Forgive yourself for having those doubtful/fearful thoughts and choose to see it differently. Instead come from a positive place of love and gratitude where you honor yourself and your life as it is right now. You’re on your way!! Namaste! ~Sarina
