If you’re anything like me and have moments of feeling overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, obsessed over the right approach and the end result, well I’ve got a secret for you to rock your world and give you back your liberation! However, before I get into this secret, let me share a work moment that recently happened.

Just a few weeks ago, I had an employee come down seriously annoyed about a coworker interaction she just had, and as a result, she was refusing to collaborate with this coworker any longer. It was definitely a case of a personality conflict/miscommunication. As in any HR employee relations matter, I allowed the employee to tell me what brought her down, asked her the appropriate questions and listened to what she had to say. We had a coaching conversation and discussed several ways of how this could be approached to resolve this issue. Once we were done discussing the heart of the matter, I asked the employee how she felt, and asked her to breathe, as to signify releasing what no longer serves her – the perspective she was holding on to and the stress of the situation.

Right there and then, I found this to be the appropriate time to talk about Yoga, how I started a few years ago and all the benefits I’ve seen in my life because of Yoga. Seriously, can’t tell everyone enough how Running and Yoga have changed my life! In my attempt to convince this employee that Yoga is for everyone and that it’s about Progress not Perfection, I decided to demonstrate for her crow pose, which took me a year to figure out in Vinyasa Yoga class. Yes, in that very moment, I squatted down with my hands on the floor in front of me, then leveraged my knees onto the top of my triceps and lifted one foot and then the other off the ground.  So there I was in my HR office in my pinstriped jeans and a cardigan holding crow pose for a few breaths.

I revealed to this employee that the challenge of getting into crow pose was more so learning how to get out of my own head, rather than the actual balance and strength of it. That very first moment of when I finally got crow pose, signified for me that I am getting stronger, more focused, and centered in my life! I was determined to find the focus and strength to do it.

Yoga allows me, just like running, to move past my self-limiting beliefs and teaches me how to get out of my own way. Truth be told, I was once someone who was ambivalent about getting into yoga. I had even tried it about ten years ago back in college, but really didn’t feel it was right for me. Thinking back, I felt intimated, awkward, not flexible, and then gave up after attending one class! I wasn’t ready to step into the Yoga mindset and practice then.

Nonetheless, that has since changed. So grateful that I finally discovered Bikram/Hot Yoga (perfect for all levels!) about three years ago! That’s when I gave Yoga a second chance, and never looked back. Right from the very first class of Bikram Yoga, I felt engaged to a higher divine level, and immediately fell in love with the Yoga practice!

Besides Yoga giving you a toned strong body, focus/discipline/more patience, relieving stress, detoxifying your body, there’s a whole multitude of holistic health benefits that comes from practicing yoga on a regular basis. Without a doubt, you’ll definitely see a noticeable difference overall, even if you only practice a few times a week. And who doesn’t want that? Find the practice that works for you!

Absolutely, one of the most remarkable lessons about yoga is learning to become more compassionate with yourself and realizing that in life, like yoga, it’s about embracing who and where you are at that moment, and realizing you’re exactly where you are supposed to be. So show up for yourself and release what no longer serves you well. Most importantly yoga has revealed this secret to me – it’s about Progress not Perfection in Yoga and in Life! Namaste!
